Angelica Cathariou

Angelica sings a wide ranging operatic and symphonic repertoire including Verdi’s Falstaff and Rigoletto, the title roles in Carmen, Maria de Buenos Aires and Peri’s L’Euridice, Britten’s Phaedra, Beethoven’s 9th and Mahler’s Symphony N.2 at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw, Opéra National du Rhin,Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, York National Centre of Early Music, Megaron Athens Concert Hall, Budapest Spring Festival, Festival International de Marseille, Athens Festival (Odeon Herodes Atticus), Festival de la Roque d’Anthéron.

As a soloist Angelica has performed with renowned orchestras, such as the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg under the musical direction of: Claudio Abbado,Steuart Bedford, Roland Hayrabedian, Loukas Karytinos, Jan Latham-Koenig, Jordi Mora, Michel Plasson, Tiziano Severini, Pierre-André Valade, Alberto Zedda.

She also performs extensively in concerts of the 20th and 21st century music. Her appearances include Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, Le Marteau sans Maître by Boulez, Berio’s Folk Songs, Pärt’s Stabat Mater, Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot by Peter Maxwell Davies, Crumb’s Ancient Voices of Children and works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Cristobal Halffter, Karl Jenkins, Zad Moultaka, Maurice Ohana, Marcello Panni, Gérard Pesson, Salvatore Sciarrino. Performances of contemporary opera include the creation of the leading female roles in new operas commissioned by the Greek National Opera and the world premiere of Theodorakis’ Lysistrata on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Athens.

Her recordings for BIS, Naxos, Naïve, Lorelt, Melism and Centaur include the world premiere of Skalkottas’ 16 melodies (“...a rich creamy voice and superb Skalkottas interpreter...”BBC Music Magazine), Mitropoulos’ 14 Invenzioni on poems by C.P.Cavafi, “Les Eluard” cycle by Theodorakis and Xenakis’ Zyia for which she was awarded the “Orphée d’Or 2012 Prize” for best recording of contemporary vocal music. Other recordings include the T.S.Eliot Songs by Jani Christou, vocal works by Silvina Milstein, Michael Adamis, Clotilde Rosa, Falla’s El Amor brujo and the music of Alexandre Desplat for the film 11'09"01 New York September 11.

Angelica is Assistant Professor at the Department of Music Science and Art of the University of Macedonia and artist-in-residence at the Athens Conservatoire. Her book “L’Atelier Moderne, An exploration of the collaborative process between performer and composer in vocal music theatre of the 21st century” is published by NOVA Publishers Inc., N.Y.
